Downtown Anderson has lots of history. Many of the old buildings have been restored and they add a special charm to the downtown events. Anderson is known as the Electric City. It got this name because a local engineer named William Whitner developed a hydroelectric system for the community to use. Anderson was the first city in the nation to use this system. Since then we have been known as the "Electric City". We have a statue of Whitner on Ninth Street and there is a small park downtown that features the gear that helped provide the power.
